Chapter 5

Diane Thorpe looked over Nina with shock. “But you don’t look pregnant.”

It was two days since Nina had arrived in L.A. and both sisters had now found time to meet. They were having lunch at the trendy hamburger place, their favorite spot any time Nina came to visit.

“Well…you do at least eat pregnant,” Diane added as she viewed the full-sizer Nina had ordered and was about to plow into.

She had to admit her burger was massive, but she felt like she could possibly eat two, not just one. And she could definitely do with another helping of the truffle fries served alongside. Damn, I love L.A.

She’d told Diane everything, well mostly. Her sister still didn’t seem to believe it all.

“So, you’re telling me, you’re like, roommates with your billionaire baby daddy. That’s it?”

“What do you mean, that’s it?” she asked, glancing up at Diane’s rapt expression. “I barely know him; remember, we met just over a month ago. So, this is really a leap in the dark for me. If it wasn’t for the baby…”

“Yes, the baby,” Diane said with awe. “Let’s definitely not forget you’re having Ethan Andrews’ baby. Oh, shit.”

“Please try not to look like I planned it all,” sighed Nina, noting that this time Diane just looked gleeful.

“Of course not, my sister is not so devious. But hey, you could have done a lot worse. When I think of that damned ex of yours…” Diane broke off and shook her head. “Thank you for telling me about losing your job and going through a hard time. I wish you’d let me help, but as long as you’re okay now, I’ll try not to blame myself too much about what’s happened.”

“How could you in any way feel like this was your fault?” Nina cocked her head at Diane.

Diane sighed, looking solemn. “I took you to that party, remember? And then even when I saw you leave with Ethan, I didn’t try to stop you. I thought you deserved at least some fun in your life for a change. Now, I just feel guilty.”

“Well, don’t. I made the choices, not you.”

“On the bright side, I’m going to be an aunty,” said Diane, with a sudden tremulous smile that looked almost comical. Nina couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m going to spoil her – or him, rotten,” Diane declared.

“That’s if I’ll let you.” They laughed again as Nina growled. Then, her smile dimmed. “I’m so scared. I don’t know what on earth I’m doing. Being with Ethan, it’s pretty overwhelming. I’m trying to keep him at a distance, but…”

“I know,” Diane said softly. “Believe me, I know. After the life we’ve been through, losing mom and dad and then almost getting separated by the foster care system...”

“Yeah,” she said, shuddering at the memory. “If we hadn’t run away from that group home, Lord only knows how things would have turned out.”

“And we certainly wouldn’t have survived for long living on the streets, either, if we hadn’t somehow found Aunt Milly.”
